Interesting question. Without looking, my guess is that the numbers would bear that out, as would the first-impression test. Can't think if a guy with a body of work to match.

Hate to say this however, but ... not sure that doesn't say more about the NFCE than it does Santana. I'm a big fan of the guy, but I've never really thought of him as a true #1 WR. He'd be one hell of a #2, but to me lacks that certain consistent playmaking magic that defines a #1.

Maybe he can change my mind with better QB'ing and a more sound system around him, but I have my doubts. Love to be proved wrong on that in 2009.

I think you would be correct sir.

Over 4 years, he averages 1031 yards and 6 touchdowns, and that's with nagging injuries and last year's abomination of an offensive line that didn't allow for many attempts down fields, which is were 89 shines.

I think the next best is DeSean Jackson, who will probably become the best very soon.

I would have to agree with Om here. Moss is a nice #2 guy but is not a true #1 regardless of his solid numbers.

The off season still has a ways to go yet too. Dallas is hoping the late season move for Roy Williams pays off. I think he has the potential to be real good. The latest rumors I hear have the Giants offering a 1^st and a 5^th for Braylon Edwards of the Browns. He has the drops at times but is very dangerous. The Eagles are rumored to be interested in Chad Johnson who, despite his age, could still be very dangerous. So when all is said and done the WR landscape could be completely different come September.

It just underscores the need for one of our second year guys to step up this season.

The NFCE has a much more impressive group of TE's than wideouts.

To me tana would be one of the best #2 receivers in the league if the Skins somehow found or developed someone better than him. That's a longshot, though, and other teams DC's respect him enough to where for much of last year he was the #1 priority heading into the game.

Even still, he's the best thing going in the division right now.

I think he could be a spectacular #2. Gary Clark to Art Monk, except even more dangerous given his speed and explosiveness. My unspoken little secret for this upcoming season (which I guess now that I'm speaking it will no longer be unspoken paranoid

) is the quiet suspicion that Malcolm Kelly, not Devin Thomas, well emerge as the first real #1 we've had around here since ... well, Monk.

Just a matter of whether he can stay healthy.

That diminishes Moss, no?

The guy is legit, he's just not multi-dimentional like some of the bigger #1's in the league.

He still gets it done on Sundays.

Personally, I think when healthy Moss in not only a true #1, but a top 5 WR. It's not his fault he hasn't had a decent QB throwing to him. The guy breaks the franchise record the one year he gets adequate QB play, and everyone still labels him a #2 poseur. If we had Kurt Warner throwing the pigskin, people would say Warner's stats are inflated because he's got Moss to throw to.

I suppose that's fair, illone & Riggo. I'm probably not doing justice to Moss by judging him not a "true #1" given the disastrous state of the passing game overall for so long.

It's more just been a sense ... the feeling that while blessed with amazing speed, Moss has never appeared to consistently have the certain "something" that separates the great from the very good---that aggressiveness to the ball, that ability to take balls away from defenders in traffic, the knack for converting key 3rd downs no matter what.

He's dominated games here and there, no doubt, but what I've never really seen from him is the consistency of that effort. And dammit, the man drops some really key balls. That part kills me ... probably enough to be the difference between seeing him as a "true #1" and a really, really good #2.

No question, though, the passer has a whole lot to do with this, and I definitely concede that's worked against Moss in DC. So a promise ... If JC (or Collins or Brennan, for that matter) end up blowing up this year, and Moss ends up in the Pro Bowl, I'll gladly eat my words in a public way. With a smile on my face.
