Why a Vick/Skins Marriage Seems Unlikely

We knew this wouldn't take long, right? Never takes too much time for people to start linking potential free agents to the Redskins, and so now Michael Vick's name is being thrown around.

This is especially premature, though, even by Redskins speculation standards. Vick has two months of home confinement, a construction job he must finish and other parole obligations. I spoke to people in his camp last week and they said football is not anywhere near the forefront of Vick's thinking right now.

And, of course, his indefinite suspension from the NFL must be lifted by Commissioner Roger Goodell. He has a long way to go before Goodell even begins to have discussions with him about allowing him to pursue employment opportunities in the NFL.

But let's go ahead and assume, for the sake of speculation, that sometime in late July or August, Vick is free of his legal encumbrances and Goodell reinstates him. Would it make sense for the Redskins to go after him?

Well, Vick's lack of accuracy and size make him an odd fit for the West Coast system Coach Jim Zorn runs. He struggled with those elements in the past. Coming to any team so late in the offseason would be very difficult, especially for a quarterback who has been off the field for so long and would have to master a challenging system on the fly.

Some have posited that when Vick comes back, especially if it is during training camp this year, his incredible athleticism might best be utilized at another position, or particularly as the option man in a Wildcat system. I spoke to Zorn at length about his study of the Wildcat during minicamp, and this is not something he is high on. Even with some current personnel who could do it -- receiver Antwaan Randle El in particular -- it was not a formation he was eager to use. In fact, he believes that more multiple formations from his offense, with everyone more fully vested in it after a full season, will result in more deception and trickery for opposing defenses.

Do I see Vick being able to jump in and get up to speed as a QB in this system right away, even as a backup? I don't. And then there is the matter of all of the tumult in which starting QB Jason Campbell has been enveloped this offseason. To bring in someone likely to be a marginal player at best, would be at the expense of doing more damage to Campbell. That doesn't seem to me to be a gamble worth taking. (Further complicating the matter is the fact that Joel Segal represents both Vick and Campbell.)

From an off-the-field perspective, the location of this franchise would seem to make the potential for picketing and demonstrations to be high. I can's see the Skins being at the forefront of teams that would immediately leap at Vick, if even such a pack emerges. You can't help but wonder if a big personality like Bill Parcells would take him on - the Dolphins were at the forefront of The Wildcat movement with RB Ronnie Brown running the show -- but any club that would do so must be ready for the ensuing sideshow and must look for creative ways to integrate Vick into the offense as he transitions back into being a pro quarterback.

Furthermore, the FO appears to be seeking what they consider to be a franchise QB. That's not Vick anymore. He doesn't have the ability to carry a team with his arm and his legs are getting old. Add the rust and he's a no go...especially when factoring in the bad publicity.

We need to stick with JC for now and not go after anymore QB's, especially Vick.

He will be more of a distraction to the team then anything else with fans and the media hounding him over the dog fighting incident.

No thanks.
