I often search for old B&W photos on a number of sites, and had been searching for some high quality WWII war bird photos when I came across this one. Not what I was lookin for, but something struck me about it. Excepting the three cut off at the top of the photo, one man stands out as not being a flyer. No leather flight jacket, and a pyth helmet make him stand out fairly well.
I know the flyers of the AVG were a pretty tight groups from reading on the subject, and some first hand accounts I've caught over the years. So then, who was this guy that seemes to be part of the group. I'll tell you who.......
Ralph Felice, my Uncle Raffie
What a find, a photo never seen by any of our family as far as I know. I showed it to my mom, and she agreed that it's surely my Uncle. I printed a copy that I cleaned up a bit, and will be sending it to my cousin up in MD. I was told that there was only one photo of him while a radio man with the AVG, and it was him alone in front of the bird, so this should be a shocker for my cousin.

That's almost unbelievable, brother. Not just that you stumbled across the photo, but that you even noticed the guy wearing the 'wrong' clothes, AND then recognized him. I can put myself in your shoes ... I think I mighta shed a tear or two.
Given the Flying Tigers headed off into the sunset in '42, and your Uncle looks to be at least in his late-20's in the picture (which, by the way, also happens to be the picture Wikipedia features on its Flying Tigers page) ... if he's still around, he's not a young man anymore. Have you ever had the chance to really talk to him about that experience? That's living history stuff.
I just about shed a tear to be honest. I was pretty overwhelemed when I saw the pic. He passed about 12 years ago. Unfortunatly, by the time I was old enough to care to listen, the two families saw little of each other because of distance geographically.
I have to start doing some research, and guess I should start with my cousin. I know he was a fairly well known guy. When I was living in CT in the early 90's, Cindy had called a local Japanese steak house for a dinner res. When she gave the name Felice, the owner of the place instantly asked if it was Mr Felice from the Flying Tigers. She had no knowlege of my uncle, so she said no, but mentioned it to me as something odd, and I told her about Uncle Raffie. I was so PO'd when we went to eat there, and the owner wasn't in that night. It was our last night in CT, and moved to FL the next day so I never got to talk to him. At that point, Raffie was living in FL, but 6 hours away. He came down our way to visit from time to time, but we always missed each other. I also know that he was in Burma through 1945, as I have a red back patch (Burma 1945) that he gave to my dad on return to the states. Raffie was the oldest of the boys in the family, and dad was the youngest of brood.
Mom tells me he was pretty tight with a couple of the higher rankin officers, and sooner or later, I'll get the story of what he did to be awarded a some sort of citation for his actions while in Burma. I never really knew my cousin. She's much older then me, and me having moved out of NYC at a young age, I lost touch with many of my family.

Following some of the links on the Wiki page, I don't find his name on the list of the original members of the AVG......... I can only assume at this point that he got involved after the AVG became part of 23rd fighter group
Now it's got me crazy for info. Working on a letter to send to my cousin today to get things started.
