I can't help but think that McDaniels knows a thing or two about great QBs and that if he was even remotely interested in bringing in Cassel he is not convinced Cutler is all that and a bag of chips. Which makes me ask, do I want a guy quarterbacking my team that McDaniels is willing to let go (granted, it is for the low, low price of two first round picks)?
Just a thought...

Fair point, Neo.
Here's a counter-point-
I'm still waiting for the the first successful head coach from Bill Belichick's NE coaching tree to appear.
I often see the term 'gunslinger' associated with young Mr. Cutler in various places.
That term makes me immediately think of one Brett Favre when I hear it. So, for ****s and giggles, I looked up a few numbers. Here is what I found.
In his first two seasons as a starting qb in the NFL at Green Bay, after being traded by Atlanta while near the doorstep of his 24th birthday, Brett Farve posted the following statistical results:
62.4 average completion percentage 3,265 average yards 18.5 average td passes 18.5 average interceptions 78.7 average qb rating
Jay Cutler, in the comparable time frame, posted these results:
62.9 average completion percentage 4,012 average yards 22.5 average td passes 16 average interceptions 87.0 average qb rating
Over Farve's next five seasons:
61.5 average completion percentage 4,055 average yards 35 average td passes 16 average interceptions 93.2 average qb rating
Now, I'm not saying that Jay Cutler is going to be the next Brett Favre, but who's to say he's not?
I, for one, am willing to take that chance. (As long as we don't trade the future of the franchise for him.)
62 can certainly speak for himself on this but what I think he's driving at is that management might have given Zorn a guarantee that he would have at least another year to get things going if Cutler was brought in.
As I'm sure you know, popular thought was that Zorn (and Vinny too) would have to produce this year or hit the road.
Nice piece OM. Sums up the situation nicely. It all boils down to one question: “Do we think Jay Cutler is a franchise QB?” If the answer is “yes” then 2 first round picks doesn’t seem like too much to give up. Any legitimate franchise QB is worth that or more. You had better be damn sure of that though; otherwise you set the franchise back a couple of years at least.
Snyder is a risk taker. You don’t become a self made billionaire without taking risks. My bet is if it within his power to make this deal he’ll do it. I’m not sure if there will be too much of an issue in the locker room if Cutler comes, provided we win. A 6-10 or 7-9 season and all bets are off.

Damned if we do, damned if we don't now. The stuff has hit the fan, so might as well pull the trigger.
Campbell is not the guy IMO, but, if all this falls through, and he defies me and does put up "the guy" numbers and becomes a "franchise QB", he's gonna want a king's ransom in the open market, (not sure how all the CBA stuff plays into this). We'll either have to mortgage the farm to keep him or lose him to the open market and be back to square one and looking for the new franchise QB....again.
We (and by we I mean our @$## front office) have already sullied the waters as far as loyalty to JC is concerned. The only thing that will change JC's mind is a big fat contract RIGHT NOW. Which aint gonna happen.
I'm confused, so I say, just roll the dice with Cutler, break out the check book Danny then hold your breath.
Be interesting to see if most of the noise regarding the Redskins was media-manufactured (wouldn't be the first time) or whether we just got outbid (almost hard to believe if Snyder and Cerrato really wanted Cutler)?
Got some catching up to do here. Same take I had before - mixed emotions :) I like JC so at some level am glad he appears to be getting another year, yet also a little sad because its been so long since we had a real talent at QB.
As we have grown accustomed to saying as Skins fans, guess we'll have to cross our fingers and hope its all for the best...
That's always a possibility and it a lot of cases I think the “Skins have interest” angle is a media creation. In this case I don't think so. The team had absolutely no secrecy on this one either, which might be more troubling. I guess the agent could have been leaking the info. Clearly the team gains nothing from saying they have interest. I think it was just a game of chicken and the Bears “won”. Time will tell exactly what they won.
Do you have to start paying more attention to the Mark Sanchez rumors that have been swirling around now?
