Teams needs: Defensive end, offensive tackle, linebacker, guard
Dream scenario: The Redskins were ready to mortgage their 2009 and 2010 drafts in order to land Jay Cutler. But it wasn't enough. Now, they'll stay at No. 13 overall and try to find more help on defense. Tennessee defensive endRobert Ayersis a player the Redskins have fallen in love with since he had a breakout performance during Senior Bowl week. He has a little baggage (a 2005 arrest), but he's coming off an excellent 2008 season in which he made 15 stops behind the line of scrimmage and took over several games. The Redskins desperately need help at left end, and Ayers would be a Day 1 starter.Phillip DanielsandRenaldo Wynnare serviceable, but at this point in their careers you don't want to lean on them heavily. There's also a chance that Vinny Cerrato tries to trade out of that 13th pick and make a run at Ayers or even offensive tackleMichael Oher. The Redskins don't have much ammunition in the draft (five picks), so a trade could put them in a better situation. Actually, the dream scenario isBrian Orakposlipping to 13, but that's a stretch. There's some thought that the Raiders might take him at No. 7. Also keep your eye on LSU defensive endTyson Jackson
Plan B: I know for a fact that the Redskins are high on USC linebackerBrian Cushing. They need to surroundAlbert Haynesworthwith disruptive players, and Cushing has the build (255 pounds) and the athleticism to be an effective pass-rusher. And don't forget that the Redskins aren't exactly stacked at strongside linebacker.
Scouts Inc. take: "After going with skill in the first three rounds of the draft last season, I expect the Redskins to stay on offense if and only IF one of the offensive tackles happens to be on the board. I think Ole Miss OTMichael Oherwill be the pick if he is there. Alabama offensive tackleAndre Smithis also a possibility. The Redskins also need to address their pass rush so if defensive endEverette Brownfrom Florida State or Penn State defensive endAaron Maybinwere available they would be considered. The bottom line is they need to address their line play on both sides of the ball, but I think they would go OT over DE. Regardless, the Redskins are in a very good spot and will find a very good player who will fit a huge need on their roster." --Jeremy Green, Scouts. Inc.
Who has final say? Ultimately it's owner Dan Snyder, but executive vice president of football operations Vinny Cerrato is running the room. If the Redskins trade out of the pick, Cerrato will be the reason why.
Not a name in there I'd have a problem with. Assuming they stay at #13, my gut right now is Best Player Available on their board at OL, DL or LB. Anything other than those three areas and I'm pulling out the poison keyboard.
I give up. I must know nothing of player personnel in the NFL at all anymore. Last year, all we heard when the Skins traded for Taylor (6-6, 255) to fill the hole at LDE was that he was too small to play the position in a 4-3 in the rugged NFC East. That he could not hold the corner against the run effectively for 4 quarters, 16 straight games.
So this year, all I read is how Brian Orakpo (6-4, 260) is the "dream scenario" for the Skins. To me this seems like Taylor 2.0, just lacking the experience, reputation and Defensive Player of the Year award. If Taylor was too small, how is Orakpo suddenly just right? Maybin and Brown are both even lighter at 252 and 250, respectively.
Of course, all this came in an article that failed to even do decent fact checking when they quote a guy who thinks Chad Rinehart is suddenly a skill position player, not a LG.
Ayers is about as small as I think you want to go for the LDE spot and he is 272. I am hearing questions about Jackson's motivation now and Cushing has questions regarding roids. Not sure there is a great choice here at #13 for the defensive side of the ball anymore.
Your problem is you actually look into these guys. You should try it my way ... assume that the professionals at Redskins Park know what they're doing. It exposes me to ridicule, sure---both from within and without---but I sleep at night.
Don't worry, bro. Before you know it you'll be losing sleep because the little bundle of joy is leaving for college in a couple weeks. Talk about your wake-up calls.

I hope they go best available.....or, trade out of the pick for multiple picks. I really don't know much about some of the guys they're talking about other than Cushing, but having watched SC play most Saturdays I'd say that Cushing is a great bet. He could really be our mainstay LB star. He's big, strong and smart.
As I mentioned in another thread I'd bet big money we're going LB. The experts seem to think we are going after the MLB from USC Rey Maualuga. I could see him playing strong side till Fletcher retired or moved on and then moving to the middle. I could just as easily see them going after Brian Cushing or James Laurinaitas.
I see good value if we could move down a bit in the 1st and pick up a 2nd. We could still score a solid LB with a guy like Clay Mathews and get a guy like Center Alex Mack (dreaming) or Max Unger. I know, I know nobody takes a center in the 2nd round but either of these guys could anchor the inside of our line for years to come.
I also expect a LB to be picked high if it times out that way. We really only have 1 young LB, Rocky, and he's had some injury issues before. Maybe Blades could eventually be a starter in the middle, but I see him as more of a back up.
