Garcia to the Raiders

Well, if reports are to be believed the Raiders are close to signing Jeff Garcia. This is interesting to me on a couple of levels.

I’ve said to my football friends in the real world (I have friends…..stop laughing) that if the Skins truly wanted to win this season they’d sign Jeff Garcia. I said the exact same thing last season too. I just think Jeff knows how to run a West Coast offense and has had some real success. Zorn wanted to install the WCO last year and it just seemed logical seeing as how Garcia was available for almost nothing. I know he’s old but he’s got a year or two left.

I know Jason ran a version of the WCO in his senior year at Auburn, but he’s got the wrong set of skills for the WCO. He’s more of a down field guy. That’s why Joe drafted him. We could have moved Jason last year while he had more value. No way we would have gotten a 1st round pick back for him but a 2nd or 3rd from a desperate team might not have been out of the question.

Is that cut-throat? Perhaps, but I didn’t think it would have been unreasonable given the set of circumstances. You don’t ask a 240lb DE to play nose tackle. Why should we expect a guy with Jason’s skill set to excel in a WCO?

Can't disagree with you in general. I've always thought Garcia was a very underrated WCO guy who's just had the misfortune of never landing in the right situation on the right team. I can see him winning a title in the 'right' situation.

As to whether Washington '09 would be that, not so sure. The inevitable locker-room blowup among the JC faction would be ugly and counterproductive, and the inevitable learning curve early might knock the team out of contention before it could muster a late-season charge. Plus, he'd be a 2-3 year stopgap at best given his age. Still, it's an intriguing thought to see a true WCO veteran running Zorn's offense ...

As to the fit with the Raiders? Now I know Al Davis has actually been dead for years. The Raiders? Running a dink 'n dunk WCO? Somewhere, Daryl "The Mad Bomber" Lamonica and Snake Stabler are rolling over in their future graves.

I agree, It would have made more sense last year. This year we are committed to our current course for better or worse. I don't see Garcia making sense for the Raiders either but with Al dead and all.....
