Thoughts on the Robert Thomas signing? We clearly need some depth at LB and I am sure Thomas is coming here with every intention of starting.
Here are my thoughts at LB. There are significant areas of need on this roster. But there are two glaring needs, RT and DE. You do not need a superstar at every single position, just ask the Past and Steelers. To me, HB Blades and Thomas are fine to hold over the LB spot for one additional season while we focus on fixing RT and DE.
Is it me, or do you all feel that the need at LB rises above RT and DE? I just don't see it as high of need right now because of the glaring holes.
My thinking changed when they released Jason Taylor. Up to that point, I'd been all aboard the SAM LB express, thinking that hole was even more glaring than Jansen/Heyer at RT. Not by much, but enough.
Now, with another glaring hole at DE and the addition of Thomas (who I honestly don't know enough about to have an informed opinion on whether he's starter or even platoon material), I think I'm favoring BLAESB (Best Lineman Available--Either Side of the Ball) first, and SAM second if they happen to rate one guy in particular high enough OVER said lineman that they don't think they can pass him up.

Ditto. It really doesn't matter to me if we take a DE or RT, just take one of them. Good teams can draft best player available. This team can't. It has glaring weaknesses and I can think of no bigger than DE and RT and one of those needs addressed in the first round.
Another thing, was Chad Rinehart a bust? He did nto step on the field last year, despite serious holes on the Line and you don't hear him in the mix for anything this year.
Maybe this makes LB less of a need and maybe not. The guy seems way light to me to be a solid SAM. We really lost some ground on the left side last year at times because we were playing too light at both the LDE and SAM spots. At this point, with two key positions "open" on the left side of the defense I have to think that we draft either LDE or SAM at #13.
Maybe Thomas is the answer but I am sort of doubting it. The Raiders did not bring him back. The Raiders! Not exactly a team brimming with defensive talent nor a team playing a powerhouse division where all 4 teams are a threat to go to the playoffs. Let us not forget that at 5-11 the Raiders were only 3 games out of first place at the end of the season. That is less games out than the Skins finished at 8-8.
Picking up players that bad teams no longer want is not usually a recipe for success.
I give a guy at minimum two years before I consider applying the "bust" label, three depending on if there are health issues. Obviously he was a huge disappointment in that he couldn't contribute at all, and whispers about not being ready for the NFL physically or mentally (as I believe Buges strongly hinted) certainly raise concerns ... but I'll wait and watch what happens this season before starting to make any real judgments on the guy.
Neo,
I'm with you on the Thomas size factor. I'll feel a bit better if we end up drafting a bigger, run-solid DE like LSU's Tyson Jackson to put in front of whoever our SAM ends up being, but am still seriously hoping the team doesn't plan on going undersized at that position for more than one more year.
Agreed. Right now, what I think I would like to see more than anything is a LDE at #13 while resigning Washington for a bargain deal to play SAM. For the games he can't play, cause we know there will be a few, platoon the other guys depending on situation.
The only other palatable idea to me is trading back to pick up a second or another third.
