I have been extremely skeptical of A. Smith for a long time now. I'm also a bit leery of M. Oher. Well, I get my issue of OurLads draft guide last week and lo and behold, they have Smith rated as the 3rd best OT after Monroe with the caveat that they rated him as such based on his exceptional flashes and that he has typically been sloppy and inconsistent due to laziness and poor technique. Their take-a classic boom or bust type pick. Surprisingly, they then rated Britton slightly ahead of Oher. This was the final nail in the coffins of Smith and Oher for me. Thus my ideal draft scenario...
1. Trade down with Detroit and take Britton at #20. (Add Detroit's 1st 3rd rounder plus 1st pick in 6th)
3. Marcus Freeman(Ohio State-LB) or Ron Brace (BC-DT) Freeman would probably start at SLB and Brace would be a very good NT to put next to Haynesworth to allow him the freedom to get after the QB. Either player would be a steal at this point in the draft. Since the chances are good they'll both be gone, I'd also strongly consider Mike Thomas (AZ-WR) as he's a S. Moss/Steve Smith clone and I don't much trust Thomas' temperament or Kelly's knees.
3. Mitch King (Iowa-DT) A high-motor, yet undersized player that plays DT. I'd move him to LDE. Jasper Brinkley (S. Carolina-LB)
5. Tyrone McKenzie (S. FL-LB)
6. Michael Bennett (Texas A&M-DE)
7. Terrance Knighton (Temple-DT) has good size to play NT and free up Haynesworth as previously mentioned or Ramon Foster (UT-OT) developmental player but could be solid depth.
If we really wanted to get creative and trade up out of the 3rd into say, Cleveland's 2nd rounder, it would probably cost us a 2nd next year. However I think either Brian Robiskie or Max Unger would be well worth the investment.

I like the sound of that. I think there is a lot of value to be had outside of the top 15 picks. Not having a 2nd round pick this year really hurts (when will we learn?).
My ideal scenario would be to have Mark Sanchez fall to us at 13. That would give us the maximum flexibility to trade down. How about moving down a few spots, picking up a 2nd rounder and being able to address DE, LB, RT or C there? Yes, I think we should address the Center position as soon as possible.
The Patriots have followed a drafting doctrine that I admire quite a bit. They attempt to gather as many high 2nd round picks as they can. There is more simply value here. There hit rate in this range isn’t that much better than any other team but the kicker is they pay less for more. You still expect a 2nd rounder to make your team and be a contributor, that goes without saying. The big bonus is they cost far less to sign and keep for the first few years.
You’ll pay the same for the 13th overall pick than you will for 3 players in the top of the 2nd round. You might miss out on some “elite” talent but you don’t have the big risk that goes along with selecting a boom or bust type player. There are a lot of really good players that fall through the cracks. Three really good players trump one elite player. Even if your hit rate in the 1st round was 100% you can’t gather talent fast enough or afford to pay them all.

I agree. If we can get out of #13, then do it. The team has too many needs to settle with 4 draft picks. My problem would be, what if Michael Oher is there at #13. I think Oher is one of the best OTs in this draft.
Vinny did mastermind a trade down last year, the only problem I have with that is, well, then Vinny has to make the picks.
Vinny and “Mastermind” might not belong in the same sentence, but I see your point. We’ll see what happens come draft day.
What do you guys see happening if we stay at 13? Do we go DE to maximize Albert’s impact? Do we go LB or do we address the O Line? I guess that will be determined by who is still around when we pick, but who would you like to see?
Of the guys who are likely to be available when we pick I like Robert Ayers (DE), Brian Cushing (LB) and Oher (OT) in no particular order. Good arguments can be made for all of the positions.

If we could pull off a trade like Yusuf mentioned, I'd like to see us take a center with one of those thirds (maybe Caldwell from Alabama?) and a LB with the other.

My gut says LB if we stay at #13. Not because that is what I want but because Vinny is so seriously opposed to drafting wide bodies high. They have resigned Wynn and Daniels so I am guessing the FO, in it's infinite wisdom, considers the LDE position to be addressed at this point. The feeling I get from news stories is that the signing of Dock has "fixed" the line, which I find funny since LG was not a problem for us last year.
That leaves LB, specifically SAM, as the biggest hole left in the starting lineup from a FO point of view.
Not what I want to see happen at this point. I am also throwing out the rumors of interest in Sanchez here. Frankly, I just don't want to consider it and I am hoping it is all just so much smoke.
