Campbell Wants Out if the Redskins Draft Sanchez

Starting quarterback Jason Campbell, whom the Washington Redskins have actively tried to replace this offseason, will request to be traded if the team selects Southern California quarterback Mark Sanchez in Saturday's NFL draft, league sources said Thursday.

The Redskins are among many teams interested in acquiring Sanchez with their top pick in the two-day draft, league sources said.

Earlier this month, Washington failed in its pursuit of Denver Broncos quarterback Jay Cutler, who was traded to the Chicago Bears. In addition to Washington's trade talks with Denver, a high-ranking Redskins official contacted another NFL team about the possibility of trading Campbell, who has been the starter the past 2 1/2 seasons, for a second-round pick in the upcoming draft, an NFL source said. The Redskins deny they inquired about trading Campbell, a first-round pick in the 2005 draft.

Campbell publicly has taken the high road when asked about the organization's apparent interest in other quarterbacks, but a source close to him said he is fed up with the way he has been treated recently. If Sanchez winds up with the Redskins, Campbell's represenative, Joel Segal, will contact the team in an effort to find a better situation for his client, sources said.

You almost have to wonder if the damage hasn't been done already. It's started to look to me like the Cutler thing may have created more of an issue in JC's mind than anyone thought. If he ends up finding out now through the team that they are in fact seriously jonesing for Sanchez---whether they end up getting him or not---I don't know that JC might not pull a bit of a Cutler on them in the coming weeks, and basically say, "hey, it's clear you dont want me--move me."

Wouldn't that be fun, particularly if they don't get Sanchez?

Seriously.  Forget trust.  I wouldn't hold it against Campbell if he totally resented the front office at this point.

He's now forced to face a media ****storm from now until who knows while preparing himself mentally and physically for another long, grueling NFL season, all the while knowing that he is gone after this year.

As much as I don't agree with the move to get Sanchez, I think at this point, not getting Sanchez could be even worse.

And on a random side note, thank you so much for starting this board, Om.  thumbsup ES is turning into a whirlwind of madness and it's only going to get worse.  Nice to have a alternative during times like these.

Fun?  Like a nest of wasps in your underwear fun?  smile

I agree.  The die is cast I'm afraid.  Regardless of Sanchez or not, I think the team will move Campbell tomorrow.  If they get Sanchez, great.  If not, they'll use the extra Campbell pick on a different position and plan on drafting one of next year's QB phenoms.

I don't like the way this turned out, but I have never thought Campbell was the answer.  He just couldn't quite get over the hump; IMHO.  With or without Sanchez, the QB situation will be in a state of flux this year and maybe next.  Hang on to your hats!

Of course, I could be totally wrong and the Sanchez rumors were just a smokescreen???

Off topic - anyone else going to the draft day party tomorrow?

Bob

Whether your like JC as the Redskins starting quarterback or not, you have to admit that the organization has jerked him around and not handled this situation well, at all.  And what's ironic is that quarterback is not the biggest deficiency on the team.

I have to agree as well, the die has been cast. If the front office seems to believe that Campbell is not the answer then why not move him this weekend and get something for him? If he can be a good NFL QB at this stage isn’t even the issue. He’s damaged goods. If he has a great season next year he could very well walk anyway given the current relationship with the front office. If he doesn’t have a good year then we get no value for him at all and he still walks.

It didn't need to play out like this.

I too agree with the sentiment that the relationship with Campbell is irreparable at this point.

It would be one thing if the team only had to repair the relationship with JC after the Cutler flirtation. I actually believe it could have been repaired after that, if the team really wanted it to be repaired.

But now that we appear to have turned our attention toward another "franchise" QB, the team might as well just take out a full-page ad in the Washington Post that says, "JC is not the answer. Sincerely, the Washington Redskins."

If things don't work out with getting Sanchez, it'll be pretty tough to look JC in the face and say, "So, Jason...um...ahem...uh...so, ya ready to be our QB this year buddy?"

I was thinking the very same thing Mark.  It is almost as if another team outspent us to get Sanchez, that we almost have to take Josh Freeman now and get a draft pick for Campbell.

I'm sure this won't be a popular possibility, but I wonder if Zorn may be a big part of the urgency to look elswhere. I understand he is being diplomatic towards Campbell with the press, but it's his job that's on the line if we have another season of .500 or worse.

We all like Campbell the guy, and a lot of us have been making excuses for him because of that, but maybe Zorn came to a conclusion that after watching him regress back into his old habits in the 2nd half of the season that there isn't much more a coach can do.

So long as Jansen, playing the way he did last season, is our starting right tackle, I agree 100%.

After that, it still doesn't seem like QB is our biggest issue , but how would you know for sure until you replace the quarterback?

After the way 2007 ended with Todd Collins, I can't help but wonder if maybe it's a much bigger deficiency than people think.  Might not be, but you just really never know.

Regardless, I think it all comes to identity, or lack thereof.  Progress can't exist with such a barrage of coaching changes, QB changes and system changes happening so often.

Coupla thoughts:

- more I think about it, more I'm convinced JC's taken his last snap as a Redskin. Whether the rumors of their lust for Sanchez are true or not, the one thing they have NOT apparently done is take JC aside and whisper in his ear that this is all a smokescreen and to just relax, dude, you're our guy.  Or if they have, they waited until after JC decided to say publicly that he'd ask out if they were true to do it.

Unless JC was/is in on the ruse (uh huh), it's hard not to read at least a little something into their apparent silence that goes beyond normal NFL Draft disinformation mode.  Alienating your starting QB is too high a price to pay for a headfake.

- I think if the team is really and truly done w/ Campbell, Jim Zorn is absolutely a key factor in the decision.  I refuse to believe the owner and VP of player personnel would emasculate Zorn like that heading into Year Two by taking his QB away against his wishes.  That smacks to me of demonizing and over the top.

- not trying to be coy or self-serving here, but as to the board itself ... you ain't seen nothin' yet.  :)
