Holmgren on Campbell: 'Have Some Patience'

http://voices.washingtonpost.com/redskinsinsider/holmgren-on-campbell-have-some.html

As he sat in the owner's lounge at FedEx Field last night, former Seattle Seahawks Coach Mike Holmgren looked across the room at Jim Zorn and said he hoped the Redskins will give their coach the time to develop quarterback Jason Campbell.

"Here you have a young quarterback and a really good young quarterback and coach, it seems like a marriage made in heaven," said Holmgren who watched Zorn develop his star quarterback, Matt Hasselbeck, years ago in Seattle. "The thing is you have to have some patience. He's a young guy. And he may come in soon and shock everybody. Look at the young quarterback in Baltimore [Joe] Flacco, he's not being asked to do the same things as Campbell. He's not throwing the ball as much as Jason. If you're in the West Coast offense, you're going to be asked to do a lot more."

Holmgren, a devotee of the West Coast system championed by Bill Walsh in San Francisco, has played a significant role in the making of Hasselbeck, Brett Favre, Steve Young and Joe Montana. He is in Washington to see his wife Kathy and daughter Calla off on a trip to Uganda where they will work in relief centers for the next few weeks helping refugees from Congo. Thursday's event, sponsored by Zorn and his wife Joy, was in support of the organization Kathy and Calla Holmgren will be working for: Medical Teams International.

From his home near Seattle, Holmgren, who retired after the last season, said he has watched from afar as the Redskins attempted to trade for Denver quarterback Jay Cutler, then explored moving up in the draft to select USC's Mark Sanchez.

"Jim is a great communicator," Holmgren said. "I know Jason trusts him. This is important. Your starting quarterback has to trust you as a coach. Trust means a lot of things. Not just trusting that he will call the right plays. It means you are connected to him in these types of situations."

Zorn, who has been working with Campbell through the offseason and in recent organized team activities said he has kept the quarterback up to date on trade rumors and added that he believes Campbell has "handled it extremely well."

"This is the thing I appreciate about him, he doesn't mope around," Zorn said.
When asked if he felt Campbell's trust in him had been damaged, Zorn replied: "You will have to ask him."

"But I say not in the least," Zorn added. "He has a realistic view. This is happening, keep your mind off of this stuff. The way you put it to him is: 'This is a reality of life. Things don't always go the way you expect it.' Who would have expected Jay Cutler would be available in a trade? Then you say, 'what if?'"

Hey, no biggie. The Zorn/Campbell dynamic is only the single greatest determining factor in how the Washington Redskins will fare over the next 2-3 years.

...said the master of understatement. biggrin

Here's hoping the light finally comes on for JC. It would be worth it just to see some people eat a heaping helping of crow. The Skins finally having a franchise QB in-house would be the sundae of course, but seeing that bitter, bitter crow being choked down by some would be an awfully sweet cherry on top....and sprinkles.....and whipped cream.

Now I hope it's understood that anyone reading this is is expressly forbidden from using the search terms "Yusuf06", "Brunell", "Lousy son of a @#*!", or "Sepuku"  in formulating a reply to this post.

Do as I say, not as I do and all. You know how that works. smile

To me, the chances of crow-eating are high this season.  For some reason it seems that Campbell's alleged suckiness has gained momentum in the offseason, independent of his performance last season.  It's reaching almost legendary proportions. Yet to me, he was very close to being a good, rather than average, quarterback last season, despite the growing conventional wisdom that he'll never get there.  Now he's got a second, full offseason and training camp with Zorn, at least one sophomore receiver (Thomas)who showed fleeting promise last year and claims he "gets it" this year, and two other 2nd year guys who may be targets if they can get on the field (Davis) or get healthy (Kelly).

I hope Campbell removes all doubt this year, plays well and is re-signed to a long term deal. He is definitely the man under the microscope and will both take the lion share of the blame or credit for how the team does this year.

I could write a complex dissertation of what needs to happen for Jason to get over the hump but we’ve all been through that before. A lot of them have nothing to do with Jason directly as he can’t control what other players do or if they stay healthy. Forget that though. Let’s take a simple look at what needs to happen. The Skins need to make the playoffs, period. If that happens he’s in, Zorn is in and this team gets more time together. Anything short of a playoff run and Jason’s out at QB, maybe Zorn along with him.

On a side note there are a lot of rumblings that Holmgren is ready to get back into coaching already or that he might be looking for a role in a front office somewhere. Maybe Vinny’s neck will be on the block if things don’t work out this season and Zorn gets more time with Holmgren as a GM. Maybe Holmgren takes both jobs like he’s done before. Who knows? There are all kinds of crazy scenarios that could play out.

The team makes the playoffs and things are calm in DC (relatively speaking) anything short of that and we get wild assed speculation like my last paragraph popping up all over the place next season. The siren call of one of the available coaches, who all have Super Bowl rings, might be too much for Dan to resist. Cowher, Gruden, Holmgren and Shanahan will all be available next year. Arguments can be made for and against all of those guys but I’m not even going to touch that at this stage.

Here’s to Jason and Jim getting it done…..please.

Agreed w/ Hog Fever; playoffs cures everything.

and WOW, what a nice scenario, Holmgren the GM with Zorn as his HC, JC as QB?

THAT might work out well, but again - the purest of speculation at this point.

My sinister side is thinking along the lines that the FO, done w/ JC, deliberately neglected the OL in order to set Zorn and JC up for failure. If the team actually produces the aforementioned playoff appearance w/o an OL upgrade - great! They'll re-sign everybody and focus on the OL in next year's off-season. If not, JC & Zorn are the fall guys, the FO goes after......pick a high falluting name here (Cowher, Shanahan, the Walrus).......and we start this whole thing up over again!

SHEESH! MAN I hope I'm wrong.

I hope you're wrong, too, Fish, but given the front office involved, the above theory actually makes sense.

There is a great video on the NFL Network about Campbell's decision making last year, focusing on third downs.  I know Wilcots cherry picked the 3 plays he shows in the video, but the stats are damning.  Check it out.

I can't see the video at work so I don't have a comment on it. However, I hereby nominate Mayor for the "Best Omfield Avatar" contest. biggrin

If that were the case, why sign Dockery? Why not just re-sign Kendall and Fabini?

A fair question Jimster. I'd answer by saying that Dockery is only an upgrade over Kendall in that he's younger and more likely to last the whole season. Therefore at best, he's a minor upgrade at a position of lesser need.

It's as though my mortgage is past due and I spend all my money paying the utility bills. It's nice to have water and electricity but that won't do me much good without a house. Now under such a scenario an outside observer could only conclude that I'm either nuts, incredibly stupid, or don't care about the house...or some combination of the above.
