The Redskins have released offensive lineman Jon Jansen, the team announced this afternoon.
"This morning, Coach [Jim] Zorn, Vinny Cerrato and I met with Jon," owner Daniel M. Snyder said in a statement released by the team. "I've developed a close relationship with Jon and his family over the last 10 years and I have the utmost respect for him as a person and a player. He has been an important part of our organization for the past decade. We wish Jon and his family the very best."
Jansen, 33, was drafted out of Michigan by the Redskins in the second round of the 1999 draft, taken 37th overall. He played in 126 games, starting in 123, for the team.
"We really admire Jon and the example that he set as a team leader both on and off the field," Zorn said in a statement released by the team. "He is a professional who was a valuable part of this franchise for a long time. Jon worked hard, laid it on the line each week and on many occasions played with injuries. Though we have elected to move in another direction, we appreciate Jon's commitment, leadership and dedication to the Redskins organization."
Not a complete shock here. This way he might have a chance to find a spot on another team before the season starts if he wants to do that. Jansen was a tough guy and always gave 100% but he was at the end of the line physically and was still making a lot of money. It was time to move on.
This just underlines (AGAIN) our need to pay more attention to the O-line.
According to PFT: "The move clears up a total of $2.35 million in cap space, but that amount will be offset by any bonus acceleration applicable to the final two years of his contract — 2010 and 2011."
I really hope that doesn't happen Miles. Ending his career with a perennial bottom feeder like the Lions looking bad or riding the bench would be a sad end to a great career. Jansen deserves better. I hope he just hangs it up and goes to the broadcast booth.

I have to agree. I guess he feels he needs to prove himself, and it's too often you see this happen when a player should just walk away gracefully. I hadn't thought about him in the booth, but he's always been quite well spoken, and it could be a nice fit.
